QR-Tekst is a word processor developed by the Polish company Malkom, for the Polish market. It was originally released for DOS. A Windows version 1.0 followed in 1993. The final release, version 2.0 for Windows, came out in 1995.

Back in its day, QR-Tekst was widely used in various Polish government institutions, including the Parliament.

In addition to its native format, QR-Tekst 2.0 can also save and open documents in other popular formats of its day, including the native format of Cyfroset, a Polish desktop publishing program.

Contents

Native document format

QR-Tekst's native file format uses the .qrt extension. (QR-Tekst 5.0 for DOS, and probably older versions too, does not give any extension to the files it saves.[1]) The format varies between versions of the program; QR-Tekst for Windows 2.0 offers three different save options, corresponding to:

  • QR-Tekst 5.1 (DOS),
  • QR-Tekst for Windows 1.0,
  • QR-Tekst for Windows 2.0.

Identification

.qrt files, saved with QR-Tekst for Windows v2.0, begin with the following:

First comes a single byte of value 0x11.

Then the format identification string:

  • format: QR-Tekst 5.1 (DOS):
    • MALKOM<CR><LF>qrt50<CR><LF>
  • format: QR-Tekst for Windows 1.0:
    • MALKOM<CR><LF>qrt60<CR><LF>
  • format: QR-Tekst for Windows 2.0:
    • MALKOM<CR><LF>qrt61<CR><LF>

Next comes the file description metadata (if any was entered when saving), stored in plain text and followed by <CR><LF>.

After this come some formatting and document settings. The actual content of the document is stored later in the file, in plain text interspersed with control codes.

Other associated formats

A fresh installation of QR-Tekst 2.0 includes files with several other unique types:

  • Template files (.std): Pre-made document templates. Their structure appears to be very similar to .qrt files.
  • Dictionary files: Used by the built-in spellchecker. QR-Tekst for Windows 2.0 includes the files SLOWNIK1.POL, SLOWNIK.GER, and SLOWNIK1.ENG, corresponding to Polish, German, and English dictionaries, respectively. There are also several extra *.pol files containing grammatical suffixes, probably to help the spellchecker to recognize inflected forms of Polish words. The package also includes a file SYNONIMY.POL, which is used by the program's thesaurus function.
  • Conversion instructions (.cnv): Files which instruct QR-Tekst how to convert between various text formats and encodings. They use a simple, human-readable format.
