HighMAT™ stands for High-Performance Media Access Technology a joint venture by Microsoft and Panasonic.[1] It was a new disc format designed to offer a dramatically improved digital media experience on consumer electronics devices.[2]

Using the HighMAT extension[3] to Windows XP built-in burning wizard, one can choose to make a HighMAT compatible CD/DVD. This process will convert any media on the disc and create an additional folder called "HIGHMAT" which contains:
- AUTHOR.XML
- CONTENTS.HMT
- MENU.HMT
- TEXT.HMT
- IMAGES folder containing thumbnails with HMT extensions
- PLAYLIST folder containing files with HMT extensions
