GB 2312 (or GB 2312-1980) is a character encoding designed for the Chinese writing system. It has been used extensively in the People's Republic of China, but is now superseded by the Unicode-based GB18030, which is able to represent all characters in Unicode. GB 2312 can represent most currently-used Chinese characters (and a number of non-Chinese characters including the Latin, Greek, and Cyrillic alphabets), but not all historical ones.
