PL/I (Programming Language One) is a programming language developed by IBM in the 1960s, intended as the primary language for programming IBM's mainframe computers. Given that another IBM programming language is APL (A Programming Language), one can call into question IBM's ability to come up with creative names for programming languages. PL/I was based to a large extent on the other programming languages of the time, particularly FORTRAN and COBOL.
