Ontology

Several versions of Indeo codec were developed by Intel Corporation and the latest versions (video versions 4 & 5, and audio version 2.5) are now made available by Ligos Corporation, which acquired the technology in 2000. Indeo Video Codec, Version 3 used vector quantization. Indeo Video Codec, Versions 4 & 5 use wavelet compression.

The Ligos website states that Indeo, meaning the Ligos Indeo Codecs package, is not supported for use with Microsoft's Vista or Windows 7 operating systems, or any Apple Mac operating systems.

The Ligos Indeo Support page reports inconsistent bundling of an Indeo Version 5 codec by Microsoft in versions of Windows XP, Vista, and 7.

Software

  • Indeo from Ligos Corporation provides a link to download the Ligos Indeo Codecs for Windows and states:
"As an option to meet the needs of those Windows (95, 98, ME, XP and NT/2000 only) users who require Indeo codecs, Ligos has created an enhanced bundle of the Indeo codecs called Ligos Indeo Codecs. The Indeo Codecs include Indeo Video version 5.2, as well as support for the older Indeo Video 4.5 and Indeo Audio 2.5 codecs (the 3.x video codec is no longer available nor supported). The Ligos Indeo Codecs package is available for purchase and download through our electronic store for $14.95. There is no free or demo version available."
