DAT (Digital Audio Tape) is a discontinued magnetic tape audio format developed by Sony. It was somewhat popular in the professional recording industry, but was not widely used in the home, in part due to efforts by copyright maximalists to kill the format.
Though it was designed for audio, it was also used for computer data storage. See also Digital Data Storage (DDS).
