ecash was the name for the cryptographic-based technology used for the DigiCash system, and later the separate company which acquired the assets of that company after its bankruptcy and attempted to license the technology to financial institutions for use in fund transfer and transactions. It has had several owners, and has been involved in a trademark dispute over the legitimate owner of the name "ecash". It is unrelated to eCache, which is a different e-currency scheme.
