LIFF (Layered Image File Format) is used in microscope image processing by the OpenLab suite. Despite "open" in this name, it is a proprietary format. It does, however, have extensibility built into the format, similarly to TIFF, which is regarded as "open" by some definition of the term. The name was apparently inspired by the book The Meaning of Liff by Douglas Adams and John Lloyd.
