Plessey (or Plessey Code or Plessey UK) is a linear bar code symbology created in 1971 by the Plessey company in the United Kingdom. It has nothing to do with the case of Plessy v. Ferguson which upheld racial segregation in the United States (until reversed by Brown v. Board of Education). The MSI bar code system was a later revised version of this system.
The Plessey system encodes numbers as well as the letters A through F, using patterns of bars and spaces between them of different widths. It is one of the earliest bar code systems to be developed, and has been used in British supermarkets.
