- This article is about the archive format. For the image format, see PAX (Pick Ax).
pax (Portable aRchive eXchange) is an uncompressed archive file format, and a multi-format archiving utility.
The file format is an extension of tar format. It is rarely used, and some versions of the pax utility do not support it.
