mzData is an XML-based format describing mass spectrometric (m/z) data including mass spectrometers used as detectors coupled with chromatography. After the Proteomics Standards Initiative found out that they duplicated their efforts with another group crafting mzXML they deprecated their format and joined forces to develop mzML which supersedes this standard.
