Dot.xxx is a very controversial top level domain that was introduced in 2011 in hopes that pornographic, adult-oriented, and sexually explicit sites will voluntarily move to use such domains.
It was criticised by almost everybody since its very start. The anti-sex crowd claimed that having such a domain would normalise pornography on the internet. The adult industry saw it as an additional TLD namespace to have to fight over. Free speech advocates pointed out the fact that having a specific content on a specific TLD would make it possible to censor it.
