Keyless entry systems are used to get into and to start many car models. They were first introduced in luxury cars, but have "trickled down" to other car models since. A keyless entry system communicates electronically with the car to open or shut locks, ignition, and other functions. Newer models (particularly for luxury cars) are often simply triggered by the close proximity of the device without any buttons on it needing to be pressed, distinguishing them from car remotes common on most other recent car models which allow locking, unlocking, and other functions by pressing buttons but generally still require a physical key for ignition.

Keyless entry systems have also been introduced for buildings.
