JPEG XL is a work-in-progress compressed image format and/or file format that is yet another attempt to be the next JPEG. It was first announced around 2017-08. It is expected to be published as ISO/IEC 18181.

JPEG XL is expected to be based in part on FUIF and PIK formats.[1] The standard also incorporates Brunsli, and the original JPEG.

  • Normal JPEG XL files, which start with bytes ff 0a.
  • Lossless JPEG1 recompressed files, which start with 0a 04 42 d2 d5 4e (see Brunsli).
  • Most standard JPEG files, which start with ff d8 ff e0.
