The GS1 DataBar is a bar code symbology that is used on products and coupons in instances where it is necessary to store and transfer a greater amount of data than will fit in a standard UPC-A or EAN-13 code. Several varieties of the GS1 DataBar exist including "stacked" ones that consist of multiple bar codes on top of one another. Some varieties are "omnidirectional" similarly to to UPC/EAN codes which are more tolerant of being scanned in random orientations and directions in a counter-mounted checkout scanner, while others are expected to be scanned with a handheld scanner scanning it from left to right in consistent orientation.

This symbology was formerly referred to as RSS (Reduced Space Symbology), but was renamed to prevent confusion with the Web-related RSS file format.
