CP001 (IBM Code Page 1, CCSID 1, EBCDIC 001) is an 8-bit character encoding for the EBCDIC character set, the first of many that IBM defined for use in its mainframe computers. This one is a bare-bones set with many unassigned code positions, which were filled in with other characters in subsequent encodings.
