COMAL (Common Algorithmic Language) was created in 1973, intended to replace BASIC for use by novice programmers, with somewhat similar syntax to that language but more structured (borrowing some concepts from Pascal). There were implementations in the 1980s for a variety of personal computers, and it had a community of enthusiasts especially on Commodore computers. However, since those machines shipped with BASIC included, while COMAL had to be obtained separately, it never eclipsed BASIC as its creators may have intended.
