AVX X image (or Stardent AVS X image) is a simple raster image file format. It stores uncompressed RGBA images.

Files have an 8-byte header containing the width and height, followed by the pixel data.

The format of the alpha samples is unknown to us. In the mandrill.x.gz sample file, the alpha samples are all 0, implying that 0 means opaque. But the applications we've looked at all think that 0 means transparent.
