The top level domain .edu was originally intended to refer to a site of an educational institution, but this was simply an intention and no checks were being done (in the same way as no check being done that .com is used for commercial purpose). But since 2001 the rules have changed, and now it has not only become a requirement, but a separate requirement, that the institution is in the United States has been added as well.

Some other countries have the subdomain that acts in the same way as .edu, but for their country. For example there is .ac.uk domain in Britain under [[TLD .uk|.uk]] which is reserved for British educational institutions. But it is up to each countries registry authority whether or not to do something like this.

Some people who want to setup an educational site that is not an accredited institution do so as [[TLD .info|.info]], [[TLD .org|.org]], or simply as [[TLD .com|.com]] domain.

This top level domain is operated by VeriSign through Educause registry.
