KCD files appear to always begin with the byte sequence <code>4A 53 5A 46 80</code>. The first four bytes correspond to the ASCII string <code>JSZF</code>. The letters "JSZ" may be a reference to the program's developer, Jacek Szpyrka (who is named in the program's About box).
