The format is intended to mark up a cooking or baking recipe, in the form of standard [[HTML]] or [[XML]] elements, attributes, and classes which can be inserted into Web pages or other documents. Some attributes from other microformats including [[hCard]] and [[hCalendar]] are used.

The intent is to standardize the format of recipes allowing aggregation and other automated use, while keeping them in a format which can be presented attractively within a web page through the use of appropriate [[CSS]].
