== Discussion ==
Only Garc v1.x supports .GAR files. In v2.x, archives became collections of image files stored in an [[Access]] database. In v3.x, the archive features were dropped.

Garc v1.x is a menu-driven DOS program, distributed as shareware. Later versions are for Windows.

Garc lists its website as <<nowiki>http://sound.net/~johnc/garc.html</nowiki>>, but no archives of it seem to exist.

.GAR files created by Garc v1.0 start with ASCII "{{magic|Garc1.0}}".

It's unknown if there are any other versions of the format. Garc v1.1 probably exists (Garc v2.0 mentions it), but has not been located.
