A stream format takes a stream of bytes, and outputs a different, hopefully smaller, stream of bytes. These compression formats are often used internally in other data structures to compress data, as well as in network protocols, such as http. Used stand-alone, a stream compression format does not offer archiving capability, however in the UNIX doctrine, an archiver like tar can be combined with an archive format to produce a proper compressed archive.

MS-DOS refers to "Microsoft DOS", the Microsoft-developed variant of DOS. Because of the prominence of Microsoft in computer industry, it is frequently the case that people refer to "DOS" when they mean MS-DOS, although there have in fact been a number of non-Microsoft operating systems also called DOS (such as Apple II DOS). PC-DOS refers to the specific variety of MS-DOS that was licensed by Microsoft to IBM for use on its personal computers, while MS-DOS is the generic version that ran on a wide variety of "PC clones" or "compatibles". Microsoft originally got MS-DOS from another company called Seattle Computer Products which had created its predecessor as an imitation of CP/M. The first version of MS-DOS didn't even support subdirectories, but this was added in version 2.0. Windows runs on a base of MS-DOS, something that was clearly visible in early versions up to 3.11 (where you had to first boot DOS and then run Windows as a separate program), but obscured in later versions (up to and including Windows ME) which boot directly into Windows, but DOS is still there under the hood.

Of particular interest to DOS users is FreeDOS, which reimplements and extends MS-DOS and other DOSs.

Operating Systems are what make computers do what they do, managing their resources and overseeing input, output, and data storage and retrieval. They form a platform on which applications software (programs, apps, programming languages, etc.) runs. Operating systems (or OSs) can be proprietary or free, closed or open source, and specific to one manufacturer's hardware or portable between multiple hardware platforms.
A category of particular interest to fans of nonproprietary software are those OSs that are developed independently of a closed proprietary system and allow the use of software originally developed for those systems to run without them.
Overview
Acorn Font files are the native format for fonts on RISC OS. Each file contains data that describes aspects of a particular typeface and weight, describing each glyph using either a vector representation (an outline font) or a bitmap. Fonts are used for on-screen rendering and printing.

Outline fonts are described by two separate files: IntMetrics and Outlines. The IntMetrics file contains information about the sizes and shapes of each glyph, kerning and basic styles. The Outlines file contains definitions of the glyphs.

Character encoding files describe the mapping between character numbers and the glyph definitions for each font.

Michael: my two cents

Is there a better term for this than "Free Operating System"? To me, that would include free UNIXes or other free OSes unrelated to proprietary systems. The usage here seems to be "free operating systems (that are compatible with non-free systems). Which makes sense for this project, but I'm the terminology seems funny if that's what we mean. Tungol (talk) 07:01, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

Is there a reason we're only listing Free/open source OS here? It's very limiting. this Should be comprehensive

:I agree... even if (some of) the authors here have ideological or practical reasons to favor the promotion of free and open-source OSs, the aim of this site is to aid in digital archaeology, which means that people will want to use it to become educated about the range of different operating systems and platforms that have existed over the history of computing, and the compatibilities and incompatibilities thereof, including all systems whether proprietary or open. Dan Tobias (talk) 23:04, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

::Yeah, I'm sorry for not getting on this sooner - I consider this a well-meaning error, indicating that we would be focusing on open standards and in doing so use the open standards of free operating systems. But we should be logging as many known operating systems as possible, with categories created for known formats that are specific to those operating systems. But yeah, "Free" shouldn't be the name of it, although I'm all for noting a particular OS is open-source. --Jason Scott (talk) 00:33, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

My two cents on the issue is that Free Systems should be listed apart as non-free ones have legal issues (copyright being of course the major one). Free OS's can be used independently of any other system and can more easily keep older software alive. Of course we should list all the various OS's, but for the purposes for which I understand this wiki to exist, OS's that can be used without legal issue are better. But whatever :) (I'm not even sure that makes sense.) Michael (talk) 01:00, 5 November 2012 (UTC)
